General Overview

The 8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro New Year Summit – 26 December 2026 is a memorable guided mountain trekking adventure for travelers hoping to welcome 2027 on the highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 meters above sea level at Uhuru Peak and is one of the world's most famous high-altitude trekking destinations. The Lemosho Route approaches the mountain from the western side and is known for its beautiful scenery, varied vegetation zones and itinerary options that provide additional time for gradual acclimatization. Starting the trek on 26 December 2026 allows climbers to travel through the mountain's rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and summit environments during the final week of the year. The standard eight-day Lemosho schedule reaches Barafu Camp on Thursday, 31 December and begins the summit attempt late that night or shortly after midnight. Successful climbers may arrive at Uhuru Peak on New Year's Day, Friday, 1 January 2027, depending on the group's health, weather, trail conditions and walking pace. The descent continues to Mweka Camp before the trek concludes at Mweka Gate on Saturday, 2 January. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed, and the mountain team must prioritize safety above a particular date or celebration plan.

Our Kilimanjaro 8 Day Lemosho Route New Year Group Joining Climb for December 2026 and January 2027 follows a traditional camping itinerary that includes Mti Mkubwa, Shira 1, Shira 2, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka camps. This schedule includes important acclimatization features, including a visit to the high-altitude Lava Tower area before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp. Climbers also cross the famous Barranco Wall and spend a relatively short day hiking from Karanga to Barafu before beginning the demanding summit ascent. The route offers wonderful views of the Shira Plateau, Kibo, Mawenzi and the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro when conditions permit. An eight-day trek offers more time to adapt to altitude than faster itineraries, but altitude sickness can still occur even with careful planning. All participants should arrive with appropriate trekking fitness, suitable cold-weather clothing, comprehensive travel insurance and realistic expectations about the physical challenge. Our local mountain team provides guiding, camp support, meals, equipment coordination and daily health checks to help climbers complete the adventure as safely and comfortably as circumstances allow.

African Trek & Travel organizes guided Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route group departures and private New Year summit climbs from Moshi, Tanzania, with experienced local mountain guides, cooks and porters. Our standard climbing services can include Mount Kilimanjaro National Park fees, registered camping fees, professional guides, mountain crew, quality sleeping tents and mattresses, meals, treated drinking water, first-aid supplies, emergency oxygen, daily pulse-oximeter monitoring and transportation between the hotel and mountain gate. Airport transfers and hotel nights are included only when confirmed in the chosen package. We can also advise on sleeping-bag rental, trekking poles, warm clothing, recommended tipping arrangements and optional Tanzania safari extensions after the climb. Travelers may request a group-joining place for the advertised 26 December departure or a private alternative if the group is full or the proposed arrangements do not suit their needs. This page covers the complete daily itinerary, confirmed calendar dates, altitude profile, acclimatization, mountain safety, inclusions and exclusions, pricing arrangements, fitness, equipment, New Year summit preparation, booking procedures and frequently asked questions.

Important: The trek starts on 26 December 2026 and ends on 2 January 2027. The planned summit is 1 January 2027, not 26 December. The mountain itinerary, departure status, available joining places and agreed price must be confirmed before booking.

When should I arrive in Tanzania?

We recommend arriving by 25 December 2026 to allow time for a mountain briefing, gear check, final arrangements and rest. An earlier arrival may provide additional flexibility for flight delays.

Do we sleep at the summit on New Year's Eve?

No. The standard Lemosho route camps at Barafu on 31 December and attempts the summit overnight, without an overnight stay at Uhuru Peak.

When should I book my departure flight?

A departure on 3 January 2027 or later is generally more comfortable than scheduling an international flight immediately after descending on 2 January. Confirm hotel and airport transfer arrangements.

8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro New Year Summit – Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

26 December 2026 – 2 January 2027

Western Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Gate

Eight mountain trekking days, seven camping nights and a planned New Year's Day summit attempt.

DAY 01 — 26 DECEMBER 2026

Moshi to Londorossi Gate and Mti Mkubwa Camp

Begin the morning at your confirmed Moshi hotel with breakfast, final luggage preparation and an introduction to the mountain team. Your guide will check essential clothing, trekking gear and porter baggage arrangements before the drive toward Kilimanjaro's western entrance.

Travel to Londorossi Gate for the necessary park registration, permit checks and mountain-entry formalities. After the transfer to the designated Lemosho trail starting point, begin the first trek through lush montane rainforest.

The trail passes through attractive forest vegetation, where birds and other forest wildlife may occasionally be observed. The climb allows you to become familiar with the group's walking pace and the guide's preferred slow, steady rhythm.

Arrive at Mti Mkubwa, also known as Big Tree or Forest Camp. The mountain team will organize sleeping tents, a meal and evening arrangements. Your guide will conduct a health review and explain the next day's ascent toward the Shira Plateau.

Approximate elevation: Forest camp 2,650–2,800 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours, depending on the trailhead and conditions.

Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Meals: Lunch and dinner; breakfast according to hotel package.

Highlights: Western rainforest, first mountain camp and group orientation.

DAY 02 — 27 DECEMBER 2026

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Enjoy an early mountain breakfast before beginning the climb away from the forest. The scenery gradually changes as the dense trees give way to heathland, giant heather and moorland vegetation.

Your guide will maintain a measured walking pace and encourage regular hydration and rest breaks. The trail rises steadily with stretches of steeper ground before opening onto the Shira Plateau.

When clouds and weather allow, spectacular views of Kibo and the western slopes of Kilimanjaro begin to appear. Continue toward Shira 1 Camp, where the team prepares dinner and the second night on the mountain.

Because the sleeping altitude rises significantly, your guide will pay attention to how participants are adapting. Report headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue or other symptoms rather than trying to push through them.

Approximate elevation: 2,650–2,800 m to 3,500–3,610 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Highlights: Moorland scenery, Shira Plateau and first major altitude gain.

DAY 03 — 28 DECEMBER 2026

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, continue across the expansive Shira Plateau, enjoying the mountain's open high-altitude landscapes. This section provides a different experience from the steep forest climb on the previous day.

The hiking route gradually leads toward Shira 2 Camp. Weather permitting, climbers can admire the magnificent appearance of Kibo and the surrounding volcanic formations.

Although the day is often less demanding than some later stages, the altitude is now substantial and climbers should continue walking slowly. Your guide may include a suitable additional acclimatization walk, depending on the group's health and conditions.

Arrive at Shira 2 for lunch or an afternoon meal, rest and the evening briefing. Prepare warm clothing for potentially colder conditions and continue drinking fluids regularly.

Approximate elevation: 3,500–3,610 m to 3,840–3,900 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours.

Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Highlights: Shira Plateau, views of Kibo and gradual acclimatization.

DAY 04 — 29 DECEMBER 2026

Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Today's trek is one of the most important acclimatization stages of the eight-day Lemosho Route. Begin after breakfast and travel eastward through increasingly rocky alpine terrain toward Lava Tower.

The route reaches an elevation of approximately 4,600 meters near Lava Tower. This higher daytime altitude provides exposure to thinner air before the group descends again to sleep at a lower elevation.

Enjoy lunch or a planned break in the appropriate area before continuing the descent toward Barranco Valley. Along the route, observe dramatic alpine-desert scenery, unusual vegetation and impressive views when weather permits.

Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall. Because this stage involves significant altitude exposure, monitoring for symptoms of altitude sickness is particularly important.

After dinner, your guide will brief the group on the Barranco Wall ascent planned for the following morning.

Approximate elevation: Shira 2 at 3,840–3,900 m; Lava Tower approximately 4,600 m; Barranco approximately 3,900–3,976 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 6–8 hours.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Highlights: Lava Tower, climb-high-sleep-low acclimatization and Barranco Valley.

DAY 05 — 30 DECEMBER 2026

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. This steep trail includes sections where climbers use both hands and feet to negotiate rocky steps and narrow passages.

Although the wall looks dramatic from below, experienced guides help participants move carefully through the route. The trail does not normally require technical rock-climbing equipment, but sure-footedness and careful attention are essential.

After climbing the wall, enjoy the open scenery of the southern slopes and continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. The route includes descents and climbs rather than a continuous ascent.

The shorter day can provide additional recovery time as you prepare for the higher Barafu Camp and summit attempt. Enjoy a hot meal, warm clothing and a further health assessment.

Continue to pace yourself carefully and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

Approximate elevation: Barranco around 3,900–3,976 m to Karanga around 4,000–4,035 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Highlights: Barranco Wall, scenic southern traverse and recovery time.

DAY 06 — 31 DECEMBER 2026

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp — New Year's Eve Summit Preparation

Welcome New Year's Eve on Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, begin the climb from Karanga toward Barafu, the final mountain campsite before the summit attempt.

The route crosses rocky alpine terrain with increasingly limited vegetation. Walking should remain slow and controlled as your body continues adapting to the reduced oxygen availability.

Arrive at Barafu Camp, situated at approximately 4,640–4,673 meters. The guide and mountain team will explain the summit route, timing, safety arrangements and expected challenges.

Eat an early meal, organize your headlamp, warm layers, insulated gloves, water, snacks and summit clothing. Rest as much as possible before departure. Conditions near Barafu may be cold and windy.

The summit ascent usually begins late on 31 December or shortly after midnight as the calendar moves into 1 January. The exact departure time is determined by the guides according to weather, trail conditions, participant health and group pace.

The New Year's Eve experience on the mountain is special, but rest and safe preparation must take priority over celebrations.

Approximate elevation: Karanga around 4,000 m to Barafu around 4,640–4,673 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours before summit rest.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp for pre-summit rest.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner.

Highlights: Barafu Camp, New Year's Eve and summit preparation.

DAY 07 — 1 JANUARY 2027

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak — New Year's Day Summit and Descent to Mweka

Begin the demanding final summit ascent late on New Year's Eve or shortly after midnight, depending on the guide's decision. Wear suitable cold-weather clothing and use your headlamp as you climb through the night.

Travel slowly across steep, high-altitude terrain toward the crater rim. This section is physically demanding due to the cold, darkness, altitude and length of the summit day.

The route generally reaches Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing toward Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 meters, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa.

If your health, the weather and trail conditions allow, reaching the summit on 1 January 2027 can make the beginning of the year an unforgettable personal milestone. Sunrise viewing may be possible depending on the ascent timing, but neither a sunrise arrival nor reaching the top is guaranteed.

Your guide will assess participants continuously and may require a climber to stop or descend if altitude illness, exhaustion, severe weather or other safety concerns develop.

After the summit attempt, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The long descent can be demanding on tired legs, and trekking poles may be useful.

Enjoy a final night on Kilimanjaro with the mountain crew.

Approximate elevation: Barafu around 4,640 m; Uhuru Peak 5,895 m; Mweka around 3,080–3,100 m.

Total trekking time: Often approximately 12–16 hours, varying significantly by conditions.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, arranged around summit timing.

Highlights: Planned New Year's Day summit attempt, Uhuru Peak and Mweka descent.

DAY 08 — 2 JANUARY 2027

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Finish the Kilimanjaro New Year Climb

Enjoy your final mountain breakfast and prepare for the descent through the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The trail enters increasingly lush forest as you walk toward Mweka Gate. This final stage is generally easier than summit day, but the path may be slippery after rain.

Walk at a comfortable pace and follow guide instructions until you reach the exit gate. Complete the necessary national park departure formalities.

Eligible successful climbers receive an official summit certificate according to the park's certificate arrangements and the highest verified point reached.

Meet the arranged vehicle for the return transfer to Moshi and enjoy a well-earned opportunity to rest.

If a post-climb hotel night, airport transfer, safari or Zanzibar extension has been booked, proceed according to the confirmed travel plan.

Approximate elevation: Mweka around 3,080–3,100 m to Mweka Gate around 1,640 m.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours.

Accommodation: End of trek; hotel only when included.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch according to package.

Highlights: Rainforest descent, trek completion and return to Moshi.

Important New Year Summit Timing

The eight-day itinerary places the summit attempt on 1 January 2027, but it cannot guarantee an arrival at Uhuru Peak at midnight or sunrise. The guide must retain full authority to adjust timing, turn back or require descent for safety.

07 / Altitude and acclimatization

Why the 8 Day Lemosho Route Supports Better Acclimatization

Climbing Kilimanjaro involves increasing altitude and decreasing oxygen availability. The eight-day Lemosho schedule provides additional time for adaptation compared with some faster routes, but this does not remove the risk of altitude sickness.

Gradual early ascent

The route passes through Mti Mkubwa, Shira 1 and Shira 2 before reaching more demanding elevations.

Climb high, sleep lower

The Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco stage includes exposure to approximately 4,600 meters before descending to sleep lower.

Extra Karanga Camp night

Splitting Barranco to Barafu across two days offers an additional recovery opportunity before the summit camp.

Slow walking pace

Guides encourage climbers to walk slowly, take appropriate breaks, maintain hydration and avoid unnecessary exertion.

Daily monitoring

Guides assess symptoms and can use pulse oximetry as one part of evaluating how participants are adjusting.

Altitude safety: A normal oxygen saturation reading does not rule out altitude illness. Persistent or worsening symptoms must be reported immediately. Severe symptoms such as confusion, difficulty walking straight or breathlessness at rest require urgent guide assessment and descent. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before traveling for personalized prevention and medication advice.

08 / Mountain guiding and safety

Kilimanjaro New Year Summit Safety, Guides and Emergency Support

Daily health assessment

Pulse Oximeter and Symptom Checks

Guides monitor participants and discuss altitude-related symptoms throughout the trek.

Emergency equipment

First Aid and Supplemental Oxygen

Emergency supplies support the mountain team's response but do not replace prompt descent when necessary.

Are summit guides experienced?

Professional local mountain guides are assigned to the expedition. Ask for the confirmed guide-to-climber ratio, individual qualifications and crew arrangements before booking.

What happens if I cannot continue?

Your guide will assess the situation and arrange an appropriate descent or evacuation response according to conditions. Emergency evacuation can involve additional costs and should be covered by suitable insurance.

Are climbers guaranteed to reach Uhuru Peak?

No. Altitude, weather, fitness, health and other factors can prevent a summit attempt or require descent.

09 / December and January conditions

Kilimanjaro Weather During the 26 December 2026 New Year Climb

Late December and early January are popular Kilimanjaro trekking months, but weather conditions are variable. Climbers can experience rain on lower slopes, cold winds at high altitude and freezing conditions near the summit.

Mountain ZoneConditions to Prepare ForRecommended Equipment
RainforestPotential rain, mud and humid conditions.Waterproof jacket, rain cover and boots.
MoorlandVariable sunshine, wind and cool evenings.Layered clothing and sun protection.
Shira PlateauCool to cold nights and exposed terrain.Warm layers, gloves and insulated sleeping bag.
Karanga and BarafuCold, windy and exposed high altitude.Insulated jacket, thermal layers and wind protection.
Summit NightPotentially sub-freezing temperatures and significant wind chill.Expedition-quality insulation, gloves, headlamp and face protection.

US-dollar cash is commonly used, with clean, undamaged notes preferred. Ask the guide for current arrangements.

A New Year's Day Kilimanjaro summit attempt combines a major trekking challenge with a symbolic start to the year. On the 26 December departure, climbers experience the end of 2026 on the mountain, with the summit attempt spanning New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

A successful summit can be a remarkable way to welcome a new year and mark an important personal achievement.

Enjoy a memorable summit attempt

A pre-dawn ascent may offer beautiful views when weather permits, although arrival timing cannot be guaranteed.

Keep celebrations safe

At high altitude, proper rest, hydration and adherence to guide instructions are more important than holiday festivities.
