About This Journey
The 8 Day Southern Tanzania Safari Explorer 2026-2027 is a complete overland adventure combining four remarkable destinations: Nyerere National Park, Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Ruaha National Park.
This itinerary brings together river wildlife, classic savannah game drives, tropical rainforest hiking, waterfalls, baobab landscapes and some of Tanzania's most remote wildlife areas.
Begin in Nyerere National Park, where the Rufiji River creates channels, lakes, floodplains and riverine forests. The park supports elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, African wild dogs and more than 430 recorded bird species. Boat safaris on the Rufiji provide a completely different perspective from traditional vehicle game drives.
Continue to Mikumi National Park, famous for the open Mkata Floodplain and reliable sightings of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and lions. Mikumi also records more than 400 bird species.
The journey then enters the forested Udzungwa Mountains, where a guided hike leads through Eastern Arc rainforest toward the spectacular Sanje Waterfall, which plunges approximately 170 meters into the forested valley below.
Finish the safari in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's second-largest national park at approximately 20,226 square kilometers, known for the Great Ruaha River, elephants, buffalo, large lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, greater kudu, sable and roan antelope.
This eight day Southern Tanzania safari is designed for travelers who want more than a single park experience and prefer a varied journey through some of Tanzania's most distinctive landscapes.

The exact distance varies considerably according to your accommodation, the Nyerere gate used and current road conditions. Southern circuit road itineraries typically require most of the day for this connection. Published routes place the transfer at roughly 230 km on some alignments, while other lodge-to-lodge itineraries approach 400 km.
Travel through changing countryside and woodland before approaching Mikumi.
Arrive in the late afternoon or early evening and check into your lodge or tented camp.
If arrival time and park regulations permit, a short wildlife drive may be possible; otherwise, relax at the accommodation and prepare for the following day's full safari.

After registration, meet your local hiking guide and begin the Sanje Waterfall hike.
Walk through humid forest beneath tall trees, vines and ferns while listening for primates and tropical birds.
Udzungwa's rainforest is home to unique plants and animals, while Sanje is one of its most famous natural attractions.
The waterfall plunges approximately 170 meters through a mist-filled forested valley.
Enjoy waterfall viewpoints and panoramic views toward the Kilombero Valley before beginning the descent.

The scenery changes from green mountain landscapes and agricultural areas to the drier miombo woodland and baobab country associated with Ruaha.
Ruaha lies west of Iringa, with the final road section normally taking approximately 2–3½ hours from Iringa depending on road conditions.
