A Look at the Journey

Itinerary

Your 3 Day Nyerere National Park Safari begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or another agreed location in Dar es Salaam.
After meeting your professional safari driver guide, depart Dar es Salaam and travel south toward Nyerere National Park. The journey provides an interesting introduction to rural Tanzania as you pass local villages, farms and changing landscapes on the way toward the park.
Upon arrival in the Nyerere area, enjoy lunch and check into your safari lodge or tented camp.
Later in the afternoon, head toward the Rufiji River for one of the highlights of this safari: a boat safari on the Rufiji River.
The Rufiji is Tanzania's largest river and forms an important part of Nyerere's ecosystem. Its network of channels, sandbanks, lakes and wetlands supports abundant wildlife.
During the boat safari, keep your camera ready for hippos resting in the water, Nile crocodiles along the riverbanks and numerous waterbirds. Elephants, buffaloes, waterbuck and other wildlife may also be seen close to the water. Boat safaris are one of the signature wildlife activities offered in Nyerere National Park.

After an early breakfast, depart your lodge with packed lunch boxes for a full-day game drive in Nyerere National Park.
Today is dedicated to exploring the park's diverse wildlife habitats. Your safari guide will follow game-viewing tracks through miombo woodland, grasslands, riverine forest and floodplains while searching for wildlife.
Nyerere is home to an impressive variety of animals. Species found within the park include:
African elephants
Lions
African buffaloes
Giraffes
Hippos
Nile crocodiles
Zebras
Impalas
Waterbuck
Hartebeest
Leopards
Spotted hyenas
African wild dogs
Nyerere is particularly significant as a stronghold for the African wild dog, although these highly mobile predators can never be guaranteed on an individual game drive.
The landscape itself is another highlight. The Rufiji River system creates wetlands, channels and oxbow lakes surrounded by woodlands and open areas that attract wildlife, especially around water sources.
Your guide will choose suitable game-viewing areas according to current wildlife movements and conditions.
Around midday, stop at an appropriate picnic location and enjoy your packed lunch surrounded by the wilderness before continuing with your afternoon game drive.
Bird lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. More than 430 bird species have been recorded in the Nyerere ecosystem, including fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters and numerous wetland species.
Continue exploring during the afternoon before returning to your lodge or tented camp in the late afternoon or early evening.
Enjoy dinner and relax after a rewarding day in one of Tanzania's great wildlife areas.

Wake up early for your final morning near Nyerere National Park.
Depending on the selected package, lodge location, permits and departure schedule, the morning may include a short guided walking safari or nature experience.
Walking safaris offer a completely different perspective from traveling in a safari vehicle. Accompanied by an authorized guide or ranger, you can learn more about animal tracks, plants, insects, birds and the smaller details of the African bush.
Nyerere National Park officially offers guided walking safaris in addition to traditional game drives and boat safaris. Walking activities require authorized guides and appropriate permits.
After the morning activity, return for breakfast and prepare for your journey back to Dar es Salaam.
Travel north through the countryside, stopping for lunch along the way where appropriate.
Arrival in Dar es Salaam is normally expected during the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Your guide will drop you at your hotel, residence or another agreed location in Dar es Salaam, marking the end of your memorable 3 Day Nyerere National Park Safari.
