About This Journey
The 6 Day Mahale Chimpanzee and Beach Adventure 2026-2027 combines guided chimpanzee trekking with relaxing days beside Lake Tanganyika in one of western Tanzania's most remote national parks.
Mahale Mountains National Park protects forested mountains, habituated chimpanzees and beautiful sandy beaches along Lake Tanganyika. Visitors can combine forest trekking with kayaking, snorkeling, boat trips and beach relaxation. Tanzania Parks
The itinerary provides several opportunities for chimpanzee trekking while leaving enough time to enjoy Mahale's peaceful shoreline.
Mahale is normally reached by air through Mahale Airstrip or via Kigoma followed by arranged lake transfers. Most lodges coordinate transfers because of the park's remote location.

Itinerary

Arrive in Mahale Mountains National Park by scheduled or charter flight and continue by boat to your lakeside accommodation.
After check-in, enjoy lunch and some time relaxing beside Lake Tanganyika.
Depending on your arrival time, take a short guided beach or forest walk before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, meet your ranger for your first chimpanzee trekking experience in Mahale.
The chimpanzees move freely through the forest, so walking distance changes according to their location.
Your ranger will lead you through the forest while searching for signs of chimpanzee activity. Once located, visitors can observe the chimpanzees while following TANAPA viewing regulations.
Current TANAPA guidelines limit Mahale chimpanzee tracking groups to six people including the guide, with a maximum viewing time of one hour. Tanzania Parks
Return to your accommodation for lunch and enjoy the afternoon on the beach.

After breakfast, return to the forest for another opportunity to track Mahale's chimpanzees.
A second trekking day provides more time to explore different forest areas and observe the park's primates and birdlife.
Besides chimpanzees, Mahale is home to red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, bushbuck, bushpig and many forest birds. Tanzania Parks
After trekking, return to the lodge for lunch followed by relaxation along Lake Tanganyika.

Mahale is unusual because its forested mountains descend directly toward Lake Tanganyika, allowing visitors to combine chimpanzee and rainforest experiences with a relaxing beach safari. Tanzania Parks
