About This Journey

The 3 Day Nyerere National Park Safari is an exciting short Tanzania safari designed for travelers who want to experience one of the country's largest and wildest protected areas without spending a full week on safari. Starting and ending in Dar es Salaam, this adventure combines scenic road travel, wildlife game drives, a boat safari and opportunities to explore the remarkable Rufiji River ecosystem.
Nyerere National Park is characterized by vast miombo woodlands, open grasslands, wetlands, floodplains and the channels and oxbow lakes created by the Rufiji River. Wildlife includes elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, African wild dogs and numerous antelope species, while more than 430 bird species have been recorded in the park. Unlike many traditional safari destinations, Nyerere also offers the opportunity to observe wildlife from the water. A boat safari on the Rufiji River provides a different perspective, with excellent chances of seeing hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and animals approaching the riverbanks.
This 3 day Nyerere safari from Dar es Salaam is ideal for couples, families, solo travelers, photographers and visitors looking for a short Southern Tanzania safari before or after a Zanzibar holiday.

Itinerary

3 Day Nyerere National Park Safari

Your 3 Day Nyerere National Park Safari begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or another agreed location in Dar es Salaam.

After meeting your professional safari driver guide, depart Dar es Salaam and travel south toward Nyerere National Park. The journey provides an interesting introduction to rural Tanzania as you pass local villages, farms and changing landscapes on the way toward the park.

Upon arrival in the Nyerere area, enjoy lunch and check into your safari lodge or tented camp.

Later in the afternoon, head toward the Rufiji River for one of the highlights of this safari: a boat safari on the Rufiji River.

The Rufiji is Tanzania's largest river and forms an important part of Nyerere's ecosystem. Its network of channels, sandbanks, lakes and wetlands supports abundant wildlife.

During the boat safari, keep your camera ready for hippos resting in the water, Nile crocodiles along the riverbanks and numerous waterbirds. Elephants, buffaloes, waterbuck and other wildlife may also be seen close to the water. Boat safaris are one of the signature wildlife activities offered in Nyerere National Park.
