About This Journey
The 4 Day Gombe Chimpanzee Trekking Safari takes you to one of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife destinations, Gombe National Park, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. The park is internationally known for its chimpanzees and for the pioneering research begun by Jane Goodall in 1960.
Unlike Tanzania's traditional vehicle based wildlife safaris, a Gombe safari is experienced mainly on foot. Visitors follow forest trails with trained park guides while searching for habituated chimpanzees, monkeys, birds and other forest wildlife. Gombe is accessible from Kigoma by boat, with TANAPA stating that the journey generally takes around two to three hours depending on the boat used.
This 4 day Gombe safari itinerary allows more time for chimpanzee trekking, forest exploration, Lake Tanganyika scenery and relaxation than a short day trip. Your final night is spent in Kigoma, giving you a comfortable overnight stay after returning from Gombe before continuing your journey the following day.

Itinerary

After meeting your guide, you will transfer to the lakeshore and board a boat for the journey north along Lake Tanganyika. Gombe lies roughly 16 km north of Kigoma, and the park is primarily reached by boat.
The boat journey offers beautiful views across the lake and surrounding hills before arriving at Gombe.
After park registration and check in at your accommodation, enjoy lunch and some time to settle in.
Depending on your arrival time, weather and park instructions, you may take a short guided forest walk or begin an introductory chimpanzee trek.
The forest is also home to olive baboons, red colobus, red tailed monkeys and blue monkeys, giving you opportunities to observe other primates even before locating the chimpanzees.
Return to your accommodation in the evening for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, meet your ranger guide and begin one of the main highlights of your journey: chimpanzee trekking in Gombe National Park.
Chimpanzee trekking is conducted on foot through the park's forested valleys. The exact distance and duration cannot be guaranteed because the chimpanzees are wild and move naturally through the forest.
Your ranger uses recent information, vocalizations, tracks and other signs to help locate the chimpanzees.
Once they are found, visitors must follow TANAPA chimpanzee viewing regulations. Current TANAPA guidelines limit viewing time to a maximum of one hour per group and require visitors to follow ranger instructions during the encounter.
Watching chimpanzees feeding, grooming, communicating, resting or moving through the forest can be one of Tanzania's most memorable wildlife experiences.
After chimpanzee trekking, continue toward Kakombe Waterfall, one of Gombe's beautiful natural attractions.
The walk provides another opportunity to explore the forest ecosystem and look for monkeys, butterflies and birds.
Return to your accommodation later in the afternoon for relaxation beside Lake Tanganyika.

Having a second trekking day is one of the main advantages of a 4 Day Gombe Chimpanzee Safari, because chimpanzee movements vary from day to day and each encounter can be completely different.
You may find the chimpanzees closer to the lakeshore, feeding in fruit trees or moving deeper into the hills.
Your ranger will determine the best trail based on recent chimpanzee movements and current forest conditions.
After the chimpanzee experience, you may continue toward Jane's Peak, depending on fitness, weather and available time.
The elevated viewpoint provides beautiful views across the forested hills and Lake Tanganyika.
Alternatively, the afternoon can be used for another guided forest walk, bird watching or relaxation beside the lake.
Gombe is known not only for chimpanzees but also for its other primates and forest wildlife. TANAPA lists red tailed monkeys, red colobus, blue monkeys, olive baboons and vervet monkeys among the species visitors may encounter.

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in the peaceful surroundings of Gombe National Park.
Depending on your boat departure schedule, you may take a short lakeshore walk, enjoy birdwatching or relax while overlooking Lake Tanganyika.
Later, board your boat and travel back across the lake to Kigoma.
After arriving in Kigoma, you will be transferred to your hotel or lodge.
If time permits, an additional cultural or historical excursion around Kigoma and nearby Ujiji can be arranged before returning to your accommodation.
Dinner and overnight will be at your Kigoma hotel, allowing you to rest comfortably before your onward journey the following morning.
