About This Journey
The 6 Day Katavi Wildlife Photography Safari 2026-2027 is designed for photographers and wildlife lovers looking for extended time in one of western Tanzania's most remote national parks.
Katavi National Park is known for the Katuma River, Lake Chada Plains, Lake Katavi floodplains, large buffalo and elephant herds, crowded hippo pools and predators including lions, leopards and spotted hyenas. TANAPA also specifically lists photographic safaris among the activities available in Katavi.
This six day itinerary focuses on early morning and afternoon photography when wildlife activity and natural light can be particularly rewarding.
With several full days inside Katavi, photographers have more time to wait for animal behavior, revisit productive wildlife areas and photograph both close wildlife encounters and wider wilderness landscapes.

A Look at the Journey

Itinerary

Meet your safari guide in Mpanda and drive toward Katavi National Park.
The distance between Mpanda and Sitalike is approximately 38 km according to TANAPA.
After entering the park, begin your first photography game drive through the woodland and open plains.
Look for elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and other wildlife before continuing to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Start early to take advantage of the morning light around the Katuma River.
During the dry season, shrinking pools attract large concentrations of wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and elephants. Predators also use these productive areas.
Spend time photographing animal behavior before enjoying lunch and continuing with an afternoon photography drive.
Return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, travel toward the Lake Chada Plains for a full day of wildlife photography.
The wide floodplains are particularly known for buffalo herds and open-country game viewing, while the large skies provide excellent opportunities for environmental wildlife photography.
Your guide will adjust the route according to wildlife movements and photography opportunities.
Enjoy lunch during the safari and continue photographing wildlife until late afternoon.

Leave camp early for another full photography day.
Explore Lake Katavi and surrounding floodplains, where elephants, plains game and numerous birds gather as seasonal water levels change.
The open plains are also important predator habitat. Lions regularly patrol the floodplains, while leopards use thicker riverine vegetation.
Your guide will allow extra time at productive sightings whenever park regulations and conditions permit.

Day 5 is dedicated to revisiting the most productive wildlife areas discovered during the previous days.
Your guide may return to the Katuma River, Lake Chada, Lake Katavi or other areas depending on current animal movements.
This extra photography day gives you time to wait for natural behavior rather than moving quickly between sightings.
Photographic subjects may include:
Buffalo herds
Elephants
Hippos
Crocodiles
Lions
Leopards
Spotted hyenas
Zebras
Antelopes
Waterbirds and raptors
Katavi's seasonal wetlands and miombo woodland support a wide diversity of large mammals and birds.
Return to camp for your final dinner in Katavi.

Wake early for your final photography drive in Katavi National Park.
Morning light provides one last opportunity to photograph wildlife before leaving the park.
After the game drive, exit through Sitalike and continue approximately 38 km to Mpanda.
Lunch is included.
On arrival, transfer to Mpanda Airport, your onward transport or a hotel or lodge when final-night accommodation is included in your confirmed package.
