About This Journey
The 6 Day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb 2026-2027 is one of the shortest, steepest and most challenging routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and quickly gains elevation through dense rainforest before joining the southern circuit near Barranco Camp.
The route passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and high altitude summit terrain before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
The 6 Day Umbwe Route has a demanding ascent profile and limited acclimatization time compared with longer Kilimanjaro routes. It is therefore best suited to physically prepared trekkers with previous hiking experience.
Professional guides, porters, mountain meals, drinking water, camping equipment and essential safety support are provided throughout the climb.

Itinerary

Your 6 Day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb 2026-2027 begins at Umbwe Gate.
After registration and completion of park formalities, begin trekking through the dense rainforest on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes.
The trail rises steadily and can become steep as you continue through thick vegetation.
Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for dinner and your first overnight on Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, continue climbing along the narrow Umbwe ridge.
As altitude increases, the rainforest gradually gives way to open moorland and more rugged mountain scenery.
Continue toward the southern slopes beneath Kibo before reaching Barranco Camp at approximately 3,900 meters.
The camp offers impressive views of the Barranco Wall and surrounding mountain landscape.

After breakfast, begin by climbing the famous Barranco Wall.
The climb is steep and requires careful movement but does not normally require technical climbing equipment.
After reaching the top of the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys.
Descend into the Karanga Valley before making a final climb toward Karanga Camp.
The shorter trekking day provides useful time for resting and acclimatization.

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu.
Vegetation becomes increasingly limited as you enter the high altitude alpine desert.
Arrive at Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 meters.
Spend the afternoon resting, organizing your summit equipment and preparing for the final ascent.
Have an early dinner before resting ahead of the midnight summit attempt.

Begin the summit climb around midnight.
Ascend slowly through loose volcanic terrain toward Stella Point at approximately 5,756 meters.
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
After reaching the summit and taking photographs, begin descending toward Barafu Camp.
Rest briefly and have a meal before continuing downhill toward Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, begin your final descent through Kilimanjaro's rainforest.
Continue toward Mweka Gate, where you will complete park formalities.
Successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
You will then transfer from Mweka Gate back to your hotel.
