About This Journey
The 7 Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Climb 2026-2027 approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the western side and begins high on the scenic Shira Plateau.
Unlike routes that start in the rainforest at lower elevation, the Shira Route uses vehicle access through Londorossi Gate toward the higher Shira area before the trekking section begins.
The route crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit toward Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu. Climbers then make the final summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
Because the route starts at relatively high altitude, good acclimatization awareness is important. Professional guides, porters, meals, drinking water, camping equipment and essential mountain safety support are provided throughout the trek.

Itinerary

Your 7 Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro Climb 2026-2027 begins with a transfer toward Londorossi Gate for registration and park formalities.
After completing registration, continue by vehicle toward the higher Shira Plateau area.
Begin a relatively short trek through open moorland toward Shira 1 Camp.
The high starting point means this first day should be taken slowly to allow your body time to begin adjusting to altitude.
Arrive at camp for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, begin trekking across the broad Shira Plateau.
Enjoy open mountain landscapes and views toward Kibo when weather conditions are clear.
The route continues gradually across moorland terrain toward Shira 2 Camp.
The moderate trekking day provides useful time for altitude adjustment.
Arrive at camp for dinner and overnight.

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the climb.
Leave Shira 2 Camp and continue toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 meters.
Spend time at higher elevation before descending toward Barranco Camp.
The day's climb-high-and-sleep-lower profile helps your body adapt to altitude.
As you descend, the scenery changes and the impressive Barranco Wall comes into view.
Arrive at Barranco Camp at approximately 3,900 meters for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall.
The climb is steep in several places and requires careful movement, although technical climbing equipment is not normally required.
After reaching the top of the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys.
Descend into the Karanga Valley before making the final ascent toward Karanga Camp.
The shorter trekking day provides additional time for rest and acclimatization.

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp.
The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky as vegetation disappears at higher elevation.
Arrive at Barafu Camp and spend the afternoon resting.
Your guide will provide a summit briefing and help you prepare your clothing, headlamp, water and other equipment.
Have an early dinner before resting ahead of the summit attempt.

Begin your summit climb around midnight.
Ascend slowly through steep volcanic terrain toward Stella Point at approximately 5,756 meters.
Continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
After reaching the summit, take time for photographs before beginning the descent.
Return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal.
Continue descending toward Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and spend your final night on Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, begin your final descent through Kilimanjaro's rainforest.
Continue downhill toward Mweka Gate.
Complete park formalities, and successful climbers receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
Meet your transfer vehicle and return to your hotel for rest.
